2027 Politics: Atiku Meets ADP Leaders as Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance Rumours Grow

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has held a high-level consultative meeting with the national leadership of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at his Abuja residence, amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting was confirmed by the ADP National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, who described it as part of the party’s ongoing engagement with key democratic stakeholders across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Sani explained that discussions during the meeting centred on safeguarding democratic pluralism, strengthening opposition stability, and preserving credible electoral choices for Nigerians ahead of 2027.

“The national leadership of the ADP, led by the National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, held a high-level consultative meeting with Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, as part of its ongoing engagements with key democratic stakeholders,” the statement read.

According to him, the talks focused on maintaining democratic competition, ensuring constitutionally compliant political platforms, and promoting responsible preparedness to protect voter choice and institutional integrity.

Sani, however, dismissed speculation that the meeting was aimed at forming a merger or recruiting Atiku into the ADP, stressing that it was purely consultative in nature.

“ADP remains focused on institutional stability, constitutionalism, and keeping credible options open for Nigerians. Any future decisions, if and when they arise, will be taken transparently and communicated formally,” he stated.

Despite the clarification, political observers note that the development comes at a time when rumours of a possible alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are gaining traction, particularly over the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.

The timing of Atiku’s engagement with the ADP has therefore fuelled speculation that strategic political consultations and alignments may already be underway ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Sani reiterated that the engagement had no hidden agenda, maintaining that such discussions are necessary in the current political climate.

“We believe these conversations are healthy and necessary. There is no transactional motive behind the meeting,” he added.

Nonetheless, analysts suggest that the meeting could be part of broader political manoeuvring as opposition figures begin positioning themselves for 2027.
