Two top Beninese military officials the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of the National Guard have been released after being held hostage during a failed coup attempt on Sunday.
Security expert Brant Grant confirmed their release in a statement shared on X on Monday, noting that both officers were freed after being captured by mutinous soldiers during the brief uprising.
Their freedom comes shortly after President Patrice Talon addressed the nation, announcing that his administration had fully regained control of the situation. Talon and other senior military figures had earlier been detained in Cotonou by rebellious troops led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri.
The attempted takeover marks yet another alarming incident in a region grappling with recurring military uprisings, following recent coups and attempts in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau.
