Alleged Breach of Marriage Promise: Actress Doris Ogala Seeks N1bn Damages From Pastor Chris Okafor

Nollywood actress and Actors Guild of Nigeria member, Ms. Doris Ogala, has formally demanded the sum of N1 billion in damages from Lagos-based cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Liberation City, over an alleged breach of promise to marry.

The demand was contained in a legal letter dated December 16, 2025, issued by her lawyers, Synergy Law Partners, and addressed to Pastor Okafor at his Ojodu Berger residence. The letter warned that legal action would be initiated if the cleric fails to meet the demand within 21 days.

According to the letter, Ogala alleged that Pastor Okafor made a “clear, consistent and unequivocal” commitment to marry her, a promise she said formed the foundation of a personal relationship that began in 2017. Her legal representatives stated that the relationship commenced at a time when the actress was emotionally vulnerable and seeking pastoral guidance.

The lawyers maintained that the alleged promise went beyond verbal assurances and was reinforced through conduct, including introductions to the cleric’s family and appearances at family-related events. They claimed that photographs, videos, WhatsApp conversations and banking records exist to support their client’s claim and demonstrate what they described as a legitimate expectation of marriage.

Ogala further alleged that she relied heavily on the promised marriage, taking what her lawyers described as “irreversible steps” based on the assurance of long-term commitment. Among these steps, the letter claimed she exited a troubled marriage and abandoned efforts at reconciliation, believing the promised union offered stability and security.

The legal demand also cited alleged financial losses. According to the letter, Ogala claimed she transferred N45 million to Pastor Okafor in a single transaction and granted him access to her financial affairs, actions she said were based on trust arising from the relationship and the promise of marriage.

The dispute reportedly escalated when Pastor Okafor publicly announced his engagement to another woman, an action Ogala’s lawyers described as a clear repudiation of the alleged promise. They argued that the public nature of the announcement caused their client significant emotional distress and reputational damage, particularly given her status as a public figure.

The letter further alleged that the actress has since been subjected to intense public scrutiny, online harassment and victim-shaming, which her lawyers linked to the fallout from the cleric’s actions. They also accused Pastor Okafor of responsibility for the alleged unauthorised circulation of private photographs, an allegation to which the cleric had not responded publicly as of press time.

While acknowledging that marriage cannot be compelled by law, Ogala’s legal team argued that Nigerian law provides remedies for breach of promise and aggravated harm arising from such disputes.

On this basis, they demanded N1 billion as general and aggravated damages, citing emotional trauma, reputational injury and the public nature of the alleged breach. Pastor Okafor was given 21 days to comply, with a warning that failure to do so would result in the matter being taken before a court of competent jurisdiction.

Efforts to obtain comments from Pastor Okafor or his legal representatives were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
