A tragic road accident involving a petrol tanker and the convoy of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has resulted in the death of a police dispatch rider, Ibrahim Hussaini.
Akpabio disclosed the incident on Tuesday while addressing senators during plenary, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and offering condolences to the bereaved family. The late officer, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was part of the Senate President’s security detail.
According to Akpabio, the accident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, shortly after his convoy picked him up from the airport en route to an official engagement. The police officer was reportedly run over by a fuel tanker and died on the spot. Hussaini was buried earlier that morning in Kogi State.
“He left behind two wives and four children,” Akpabio told lawmakers, adding that he would personally ensure support for the family. He announced plans to recommend two of the officer’s senior children for immediate employment in government agencies or absorb them into his private ventures if necessary.
Following the disclosure, Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) raised a motion on personal explanation, formally presenting the matter to the Senate. He noted that Hussaini, who hailed from Kogi State, had served in Akpabio’s convoy since 2023 and was due to retire next year.
Karimi also informed the chamber of another loss, the death of Ibrahim Tukur, a long-serving driver attached to Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East). Tukur reportedly died at his residence on Saturday after 25 years of dedicated service.
Senator Jibrin later paid tribute to his late driver, recalling that Tukur had worked with him since his early banking career at the defunct AfriBank, and offered prayers for his soul.
The plenary session ended with the Senate observing a minute of silence in honour of both deceased aides.
