NISO Restores Nationwide Power Supply After Grid Disturbance

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced that electricity supply has been fully restored across the country following a system disturbance that caused a partial collapse of the national grid.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, NISO said power has been stabilised nationwide, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause and sequence of events that led to the incident.

According to the system operator, the national grid experienced a disturbance at about 2:01 p.m. on Monday, resulting in the tripping of several generating units and critical 330 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines, which disrupted electricity supply in many parts of the country.

NISO recalled that the vandalization of the Lagos–Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline on December 10 had already led to a reduction in power generation, further exposing the fragility of the national grid.

Despite the widespread impact, NISO said the Delta generation complex successfully operated on island mode at the 132kV sub-transmission level, ensuring continued electricity supply to Oghara, Amukpe, Benin and Efunrun 132kV substations. The complex reportedly generated a total of 114 megawatts from four units at the Delta Thermal Power Station during the incident.

The operator noted that, in line with established operational procedures, it immediately activated system response measures using its dispatch and monitoring tools at the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo to restore stability.

NISO further assured Nigerians that appropriate measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence of such major system disturbances, reiterating its commitment to proactive grid management and the application of best operational practices to ensure a stable and reliable national electricity grid.
