A major fire outbreak in the early hours of New Year’s Day has gutted Ozyet Suya, one of Abuja’s most popular suya and food destinations, destroying several shops and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred at River Park Garden, where the well-known eatery is located. Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out shortly after New Year celebrations, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky as traders, workers, and nearby residents scrambled to salvage valuables from the burning structures.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that firefighters from the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service swiftly responded to distress calls and worked tirelessly to contain the inferno before it spread further.
Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially confirmed, unverified reports suggest that the blaze may have been triggered by fireworks set off during the New Year festivities. The restaurant building was completely engulfed in flames and reduced to rubble.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not confirmed whether there were casualties, while investigations are expected to be launched to determine the precise cause of the fire.
The destruction of Ozyet Suya has sparked widespread reactions across the Federal Capital Territory, with workers and patrons expressing shock and sadness over the loss of the popular eatery. Many have also called for greater caution in the use of fireworks and stricter safety measures during festive celebrations to prevent similar incidents.
The incident once again underscores the safety risks associated with New Year festivities and has renewed calls for improved fire safety awareness and enforcement in public spaces.
