New Year Fire Guts Four Electronics Shops in Ikotun, Lagos

Four electronics shops were completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day at Ikotun, Lagos State.

The affected shops, located in a building beside GUO Transport Company, were stocked with valuable items including washing machines, televisions and power generators, all of which were razed by the inferno.

A resident in the area said quick efforts by neighbours helped prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the building before the Lagos State Fire Service arrived.

“People around poured large quantities of water on the fire to contain it until firefighters came. We are grateful for their swift response. Without their intervention, the entire building and nearby properties would have been affected,” he said.

Although the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed, a faulty electrical circuit is suspected. The area has since been cordoned off to ensure public safety, and no casualties were recorded.

The incident adds to a series of recent fire outbreaks in Lagos, with other properties such as the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Army Arena Market in Oshodi having been gutted by fire within the past eight days.
