Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he would only consider defecting to another political party if he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso made the statement on Saturday while addressing supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at his residence in Kano. He stressed that any decision to defect must reflect his political standing and the strength of his nationwide support base built over more than four decades.
According to him, his loyalists across the country would not accept a move to another party unless it guarantees him one of the top two positions in the 2027 elections.
The former governor disclosed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had approached him to join the party, but he rejected the invitation due to the absence of a clear and meaningful offer.
Kwankwaso said he questioned what the APC was prepared to offer beyond appointments, adding that no response was provided to his concerns or those of his political associates.
Reaffirming his ambition, he stated that the NNPP remains firmly rooted in the Kwankwasiyya ideology, which prioritises lifting people out of poverty, youth empowerment through education and employment, economic growth, improved healthcare, and agricultural development.
He added that the party is preparing for a strong outing in the 2027 elections, describing the contest as a national project that requires unity, especially in Kano State.
Kwankwaso also criticised the reported plan by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect, describing it as a betrayal. However, he urged his supporters to remain calm and prayerful despite the evolving political situation.
