Unpaid Bonuses: Super Eagles Threaten Boycott of Algeria AFCON Clash

Players of the Super Eagles have threatened to boycott their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Algeria over unpaid winning bonuses, insisting they will not travel to Marrakech until all outstanding entitlements are settled by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

A highly reliable source within the team disclosed the development, revealing that both players and officials are still owed bonus payments from the ongoing tournament.

According to the source, win bonuses for four matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique remain unpaid. While the players remain committed to representing Nigeria and progressing in the competition, they are said to have drawn a clear line over the unresolved financial issues.

The source confirmed that the team has resolved not to train or travel to Marrakech for the next AFCON fixture unless the outstanding payments are addressed.

This is not the first time such a situation has arisen. In November, the Super Eagles similarly threatened to boycott their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon, also over unpaid entitlements.

At the time, in a joint statement signed by players and officials, the team said:
“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparations for Thursday’s game with Gabon.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Football Federation is yet to issue an official response on the matter.
