Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has backed Nigeria’s Super Eagles as serious contenders for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title following their impressive quarter-final victory over the Desert Foxes.
Nigeria secured a convincing 2–0 win on Saturday, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, ending Algeria’s campaign and booking the Super Eagles a place in the semi-finals.
Mahrez Praises Nigeria’s Golden Generation
Reacting to the defeat, Mahrez admitted that Nigeria possesses a talented and well-balanced squad capable of going all the way in the tournament.
“Maybe it will be the time for Nigeria to win. They have a good generation. Sometimes you can have a good generation and not win, but I think they have a good chance,” Mahrez said.
Nigeria’s Strong AFCON Pedigree
Nigeria are one of Africa’s most successful football nations, having won the AFCON title three times in 1980, 1994 and 2013. The Super Eagles have also finished as runners-up on four occasions and consistently remain among the continent’s elite teams.
At AFCON 2025, Nigeria have been outstanding, maintaining a perfect record so far, with dominant performances that underline their title ambition and depth in attack and defence.
Eyes on a Fourth AFCON Crown
The Super Eagles will now face host nation Morocco in a high-stakes semi-final clash as they chase a record-extending fourth AFCON title. The other semi-final will see African heavyweights Egypt battle Senegal for a place in the final.
With momentum, experience and quality on their side, Nigeria appear well-positioned to turn Mahrez’s prediction into reality.
