Kano Governor Abba Yusuf to Rejoin APC Monday After Exit from NNPP

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, is set to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, following his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The development was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Bature Tofa.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf’s move marks a return to the APC, the political party he first joined in 2014. That year, he won the party’s primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat but later stepped aside in favour of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Explaining the decision, the governor said his return to the ruling party was informed by “the prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion and development,” describing the move as both strategic and necessary.

Governor Yusuf noted that the APC remains “a familiar and well-structured platform for progressive governance,” adding that rejoining the party would strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government.

“By returning to the APC, we will be better positioned to fast-track infrastructural development, enhance security coordination and improve service delivery across Kano State,” the governor was quoted as saying.

He added that the decision would help consolidate political stability and unity in the state, stressing that it was taken in the overall interest of the people of Kano.

The statement further revealed that Governor Yusuf will officially register as an APC member in Kano on Monday, alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.

The governor is also expected to formally launch the APC e-registration exercise in Kano State during the event.
