The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council chapter of the African Democratic Congress, Omale Sule, has alleged that the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, received ₦100 million from the party’s national leadership ahead of the Area Council elections.
Sule made the claim on Friday while addressing journalists in Abuja, stating that members of the party’s local structure were unaware of how the funds were utilised.
According to him, party members in the council did not benefit from the money allegedly given to the senator before the elections.
“We heard that ₦100 million was given to Senator Ireti Kingibe from the ADC national leadership just before the FCT local government election, but we never saw anything from her,” Sule said.
The allegation comes amid an ongoing dispute within the party, as the FCT chapter of the African Democratic Congress recently approached the Federal High Court Abuja seeking an order to stop Kingibe from presenting herself as a member of the party.
Sule also accused the senator of failing to work closely with the party’s leadership structure in the territory.
According to him, the FCT senator rarely attends party meetings or communicates with local party leaders.
The ADC chairman noted that political leaders are expected to maintain regular interaction with their grassroots party structures.
He cited examples of national political leaders who still remain connected with their local party units.
“Everybody, even the president of this country today has a ward where he comes from. Whenever meetings are called and he cannot attend, he sends a message across,” Sule said.
He added that the FCT senator, whom he described as the party’s top political leader in the territory, has not maintained such engagement with party officials.
“In our case here, the only senator we have who is our leader in the FCT is not attending meetings and does not liaise with the state chairmen,” he added.
The senator has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
