Olympique Marseille has been hit with disciplinary action by UEFA following serious incidents involving their supporters during the club’s Champions League home match against Atalanta. The European football governing body announced the sanctions on Saturday, citing multiple violations that occurred during the November 5 fixture at the Stade Vélodrome.
During the tense 1–0 defeat, sections of Marseille fans were reported to have ignited flares, thrown dangerous projectiles, and used laser devices, actions that posed significant safety risks and disrupted the match atmosphere. UEFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incidents and imposed strict measures aimed at reinforcing stadium safety and curbing fan-related misconduct.
As part of the punishment, Marseille has been fined €71,000 (approximately $82,500) and will be required to close a section of the south stand for their upcoming Champions League clash against Newcastle United on November 25. The closure is expected to significantly affect attendance and atmosphere, serving as a strong warning to the club and its supporters.
In addition to the fines and partial stadium ban, Marseille’s goalkeeping coach, Alexandre Salvat, has been handed a two-match suspension for verbally insulting a match official during the encounter with Atalanta. UEFA stressed that such behavior from club staff is unacceptable and undermines the spirit of fair play.
This latest disciplinary action adds to Marseille’s growing list of fan-related issues in recent years, further pressuring the club to strengthen its internal control measures and maintain UEFA’s strict standards for crowd management and sportsmanship.
