Bawumia Wins NPP Presidential Primary, Secures Flagbearer Ticket for 2028 Elections


Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the presidential flagbearer of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) after winning the party’s primary election held on Saturday, January 31.

The former Vice President recorded a decisive victory, polling 110,643 votes, which represents 56.48 percent of the total votes cast, positioning him to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Kennedy Agyapong finished in second place with 46,554 votes (23.76 percent), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes (18.53 percent).

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 percent), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes (0.21 percent).

The primary election witnessed participation from over 211,000 delegates nationwide, who voted across 333 polling centres in all 275 constituencies. The exercise was conducted under tight security and closely supervised by party officials to ensure transparency and credibility.

Early results from collation centres had already indicated a strong performance by Dr. Bawumia, reflecting widespread support among party delegates.

Party leaders and observers described the primary as largely peaceful, with minimal incidents recorded during both voting and counting processes.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in him and pledged to lead a unifying and inclusive campaign ahead of the general elections.

He also called on party members, including supporters of other aspirants, to unite behind the NPP in pursuit of electoral victory in 2028.
