Egypt–Nigeria Friendly Rescheduled to December 16 Amid AFCON Player Release Delay

The much-anticipated international friendly between Egypt and Nigeria has been rescheduled for December 16, following FIFA’s directive postponing the release date for Africa Cup of Nations–bound players.

The game, initially slated for December 14, was moved after FIFA clarified that clubs are only obligated to release players beginning December 15. The adjustment ensures that key stars including Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Omar Marmoush of Manchester City will be available for the fixture.

The match brings together two nations with sharply contrasting AFCON histories.
Egypt, the continent’s most decorated team with seven titles, have not lifted the trophy since 2010. The Pharaohs head into Morocco 2025 placed in Group B, alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles remain Africa’s most consistent medal contenders. They have secured third place a record eight times (1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2019) and finished as runners-up on five occasions (1984, 1988, 1990, 2000, 2023).

The December showdown is expected to serve as a crucial test for both teams as they intensify preparations for the upcoming AFCON tournament in Morocco.
