Lagos Assembly Suspends Planned Demolitions in Makoko After Protests

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of the planned demolition of houses and structures in the Makoko area of the state.

The directive was announced on Tuesday by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, following growing protests from residents, activists, and civil society organisations opposing the exercise.

The decision came after a meeting between lawmakers and representatives of the Makoko community, where concerns surrounding the demolition were raised and discussed.

Speaking on behalf of the Assembly, Adams stated that the House has instructed all relevant authorities to halt the demolitions pending further review. He added that the Assembly will collaborate with appropriate ministries and government agencies to reassess the issues surrounding the exercise.

He also emphasized that all stakeholders would be properly engaged before any further action is taken.

In the statement, Adams said:
“On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped.”

The suspension follows sustained agitation by members of the Makoko community and advocacy groups who had earlier called on the government to reconsider the demolition plans.

Further details are expected as discussions continue between the government and community representatives.
