The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed rumours of any political alliance or behind-the-scenes negotiations with President Bola Tinubu or the Presidency. According to the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, the NNPP remains fully focused on strengthening its internal structures ahead of the 2027 general elections and will not be entering into any partnership that could undermine its identity or electoral prospects.
Speaking in an interview with The Nation, Dr. Ahmed insisted that the party’s leadership is not engaged in any form of political romance with the Presidency.
“I can tell you for free that the national leader of the NNPP is not romancing or making any conversation with either the President or the Presidency and that is a genuine statement, not a political one,” he said.
Dr. Ahmed explained that the battle for Kano State in 2027 a region critical to the party’s political influence will be fought and won based on the will of the people, not through political alignments. He emphasised that joining forces with the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be counterproductive.
“I don’t believe that because we want to be successful, we have to join the APC. We believe that joining the APC will guarantee our failure in Kano,” he declared.
NNPP Positions Itself as a Major National Force
According to the chairman, the NNPP is not just preparing for Kano but is working strategically to expand its footprint nationwide. He noted that aside from the APC, the NNPP is the only party with a strong and functional national structure cutting across all states and local government areas.
He reaffirmed that the party’s doors remain open to all aspirants seeking to contest its presidential ticket ahead of 2027. While acknowledging the influence of former governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Dr. Ahmed stressed that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) remains the supreme decision-making body.
“Kwankwaso is influential, but he is not the deciding factor. The deciding factor is the NWC. And he knows that and will respect that,” he noted.
Opposition Crises Not Caused by APC, Says NNPP
Dr. Ahmed played down claims that the ruling APC is behind the turbulence rocking key opposition parties like the PDP and Labour Party. According to him, internal weaknesses not external interference are responsible for their challenges.
“Whatever party is in crisis is in crisis due to its own internal contradictions,” he said. “If the PDP and Labour Party were united, no outside force could break them into two or three pieces.”
NNPP’s Quiet Strategy vs PDP “Noisy Politics”
As the electoral terrain shifts toward 2027, Dr. Ahmed said the future looks uncertain for the PDP and Labour Party, but the NNPP prefers a more strategic and measured approach.
“We prefer to be silent than to be noisy like the PDP, because they are noisy for all the wrong reasons while we are silent for all the right reasons,” he remarked.
He suggested that once the NNPP unveils its upcoming political roadmap, Nigerians will understand the party’s long-term strategy and vision.
“When the time comes, you will return and say, ‘You told me so,’” he concluded confidently.
