Over 30 Feared Dead, Scores Abducted as Terrorists Storm Niger Market

No fewer than 30 people have been killed, while many others were abducted, following a brutal attack by suspected terrorists on Kasuwan-Daji market in Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The deadly assault, which occurred on Saturday evening, reportedly lasted into the early hours of Sunday. Witnesses said the heavily armed attackers invaded the community, looted shops, made away with foodstuffs and valuables worth millions of naira, and later set the market on fire.

Residents disclosed that the attackers emerged from the National Park in Borgu LGA and carried out the operation without resistance. One local source claimed that about 42 people were tied and killed during the raid.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday. In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said over 30 people lost their lives, while several others were kidnapped.

According to him, intelligence reports revealed that suspected bandits from the National Park forest along Kabe District invaded Kasuwan-Daji market at about 4:30 pm on January 3, 2026, burning the market and looting shops before fleeing with food items.

Abiodun added that a joint security team visited the scene on Sunday morning and confirmed the casualty figures. He said efforts are currently ongoing to rescue those abducted, assuring that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue.
