Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strengthened his administration’s commitment to social welfare by disbursing ₦1.6 billion to support 4,117 vulnerable residents across the state under the Eko Cares, Eko Listens programme over the past year. The initiative aims to cushion the effects of economic hardship and empower residents to meet urgent personal and business needs.
The disbursement was confirmed by Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, during a cheque presentation ceremony for an additional 517 beneficiaries at the Governor’s Office, Alausa, Ikeja. Dr. Afolabi emphasized that the programme is non-partisan, assisting residents regardless of political affiliation, ethnic background, or religious belief, and reflects the governor’s ongoing commitment to improving the living standards of Lagosians.
Beneficiaries are selected through strict verification guidelines. Eligibility criteria include proof of Lagos residency via a Lagos State Resident Registration Agency (LASRRA) card, possession of a valid National Identity Number (NIN), and demonstrable financial need. Verified applicants are subsequently contacted and funded according to assessed requirements.
The cheque values ranged from ₦300,000 to ₦1.5 million, depending on each beneficiary’s specific circumstances. Dr. Afolabi warned recipients against frivolous spending, stressing that the funds are a lifeline, not a loan. “Do not spend it on luxury or wasteful ventures. Use it for your small business, school fees, rent, or medical bills as stated in your application. It may not solve all your problems, but it will ease your burden. Do not disappoint the Governor,” he stated.
Several beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, admitting that they initially doubted the authenticity of the programme. Many revealed plans to invest the funds into income-generating activities such as content creation, petty trading, fashion design, and other small businesses. Others indicated they would use the support for urgent personal needs, including rent, school fees, and medical expenses.
One recipient described the initiative as genuine and transformative, noting that it has restored confidence in the government’s commitment to the welfare of Lagos residents. The programme not only provides immediate financial relief but also fosters entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency among residents, empowering them to sustain themselves in the long term.
Dr. Afolabi further disclosed that the programme would expand to assist more than 1,000 additional residents before the end of 2025, ensuring a broader reach of the initiative across Lagos State. The Eko Cares, Eko Listens programme forms part of a broader government effort to create a social safety net and support the economic resilience of the state’s most vulnerable populations.
Through structured, accountable disbursements, Lagos State is demonstrating a model for effective social intervention, blending financial assistance with guidance and accountability to ensure that resources are used meaningfully. Beneficiaries now have renewed hope that the government is committed to improving livelihoods and supporting those in need, solidifying public trust and confidence in state-led welfare programmes.
