Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was formally received on Saturday by Vice President Kashim Shettima at a ceremony in Jalingo.
Welcoming the governor on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Shettima described the defection as a significant moment for both the APC and Taraba State, praising Kefas for his inclusive leadership style and commitment to development.
According to the Vice President, the APC was founded as a broad platform for Nigerians dedicated to national growth, noting that Kefas’ decision aligns with the party’s core principles.
“We believe nations thrive when they recognize their strengths. Taraba State is an essential part of Nigeria with enormous potential for national development. The APC is a meeting point for people committed to progress. We welcome our brother home,” Shettima said.
He commended Kefas for promoting unity in a state known for its ethnic and religious diversity and urged residents to continue supporting the governor’s developmental agenda. Shettima also described Kefas as the undisputed leader of the APC in Taraba State.
The governor’s planned defection had earlier been announced in December 2025, with the formal switch initially scheduled for November 19 before being postponed due to the kidnapping of students in Kebbi State.
Also speaking at the event, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, described the defection as a major boost for both the party and Taraba State. He expressed confidence that the move would help unlock the state’s economic and developmental potential while assuring members of fairness and inclusivity.
“Joining the APC is one of the best decisions for Taraba State. The state is richly endowed, and this alignment will position it for greater development,” Yilwada stated.
In his remarks, Governor Kefas said his decision was made in the best interest of Taraba people, emphasizing that it was driven by service rather than personal ambition.
“This is not about power, but purpose. We must align to deliver development. I will strengthen the mandate given to me and ensure fairness to all,” Kefas said.
He also praised President Tinubu’s leadership and declared Taraba State open to investment and development opportunities.
