Tinubu Heads to Türkiye for State Visit to Boost Nigeria–Turkey Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Monday, January 26, depart Abuja for a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, the Presidency has confirmed.

The disclosure was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the visit is aimed at deepening the long-standing cordial relations between Nigeria and Türkiye while unlocking new areas of strategic cooperation.

According to the Presidency, discussions during the visit will focus on strengthening collaboration in critical sectors such as security, education, social development, innovation, and aviation. The trip comes as a follow-up to the official visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Nigeria in October 2021.

President Tinubu is expected to hold high-level political and diplomatic engagements with Turkish authorities, with particular attention on mutual interests in finance, communications, trade, and investment. Both countries are also scheduled to sign several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, media and communications, military collaboration, and protocol matters.

A Nigeria–Türkiye business forum will form a key part of the visit, bringing together investors from both nations to explore opportunities for expanded bilateral trade and investment.

The President will be accompanied by top government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson.

Other members of the delegation include the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the state visit.
