Abia Set to Host First-Ever Tertiary Institutions Sports Festival as 1,000 Students Prepare to Compete

Abia State is gearing up for its maiden Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta, a landmark event that will bring together 1,000 students from public and private tertiary institutions across the state to compete in a wide range of sporting activities. The event is scheduled to take place from November 25 to 28, 2025, across multiple venues in Abia State.

The festival will feature 26 sporting events, including football, track and field, swimming, lawn tennis, and several other competitions designed to showcase young talents and promote physical and mental development among students.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, announced the details on Thursday, explaining that the initiative aims to foster unity among institutions, nurture student talent, and steer young people away from negative social influences such as cultism, drug abuse, and other deviant behaviours.

According to her, the sports fiesta, jointly organized by the Abia State Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, will run simultaneously across designated venues, giving students the opportunity to participate in enriching extracurricular activities.

She emphasized that the event is designed not only to build athletic skills but also to promote a sense of belonging, improve student-lecturer relationships, and positively reshape the mindset of young people across the state.

Speaking further, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, said the fiesta will help discover new athletic talent capable of representing Abia State in national and international competitions.

He revealed that:

  • Track and field events will be held at the Umuahia Township Stadium,
  • Football matches will take place at Ibeku High School,
  • Lawn tennis games will be hosted at the Ridge Club, Umuahia.

Ananaba also commended Governor Alex Otti for prioritizing youth development in his administration, noting that adequate security and accommodation arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth and successful event.

The historic sports festival is expected to energize youth engagement, strengthen institutional bonds, and set a new standard for extracurricular excellence across Abia State’s tertiary education system.
