ADC Applauds Senate’s Reversal of Disputed Electoral Bill, Calls It ‘Major Victory for Nigerians’

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has praised the 10th Senate for reversing controversial sections of the Electoral Amendment Bill, describing the development as a significant victory for Nigerian democracy and civic engagement.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, commended Nigerians for their sustained advocacy, both online and offline, which he said played a crucial role in influencing the Senate’s decision.

Abdullahi emphasized that the Senate’s action demonstrates the power of collective civic participation in shaping democratic processes and countering partisan interests.

“We must stay alert to avoid last-minute changes or loopholes that could undermine the process,” Abdullahi stated.
“Democracy thrives on active engagement, persistence, and sometimes peaceful dissent.”

According to the ADC spokesperson, the reversal of the disputed provisions shows that public pressure and citizen involvement can compel lawmakers to reconsider policies that may threaten electoral integrity.

While celebrating the development, the opposition party cautioned Nigerians against complacency. Abdullahi noted that the legislative process is not yet complete and urged citizens to remain vigilant until the bill is fully passed into law.

“However, we must not relent. This is only a step forward,” he said.

The ADC stressed that the momentum generated by public advocacy must be sustained until the amended Electoral Bill is: Passed by the National Assembly, assented to by the President, officially gazetted, enforced as law across the country

The party reiterated that electoral reforms are critical to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring credible elections in the future. It called on Nigerians to continue engaging in peaceful and constructive advocacy to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

By urging sustained vigilance, the ADC positioned the Senate’s reversal as a milestone in the broader struggle for transparent and accountable governance.
