APC Sweeps Niger LG Elections, Wins All Chairmanship Seats and 271 Councillorship Positions

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in the just-concluded Niger State Local Government elections, securing all 25 chairmanship positions and 271 out of 274 councillorship seats, according to official results announced by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC).

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to win only three councillorship seats—two in Tafa Local Government Area and one in Rafi Local Government Area—while other political parties, including the Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), failed to secure any positions.

Announcing the outcome on Monday, the NSIEC Commissioner for Operations, Mohammed Liman, said the election was conducted across all 25 local government areas of the state in strict compliance with electoral laws and the commission’s operational protocols.

“All returning officers have completed the collation and announcement of results as stipulated by law,” Liman stated. “After thorough review and verification, the commission has duly endorsed and confirmed the results as officially declared.”

He added that certificates of return will soon be presented to all newly elected chairpersons and councillors, noting that relevant parties have already been informed of the timetable for the issuance ceremony.

The local government elections, held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, witnessed participation from candidates representing more than ten political parties, making it one of the most competitive polls in recent times in the state. Despite this, the ruling APC demonstrated overwhelming dominance, further consolidating its political control across Niger State.

Political observers have attributed the APC’s victory to the party’s grassroots mobilisation, incumbency advantage, and internal unity, which they said gave it a strong edge over fragmented opposition parties. Others, however, have called for greater transparency and inclusiveness in future local polls, urging NSIEC to ensure broader participation and public confidence in the electoral process.

The election outcome further strengthens the APC’s hold on Niger State, coming at a time when political activities are heightening across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts believe the result could shape the state’s political direction in the coming years, particularly in the build-up to the next national polls.
