The Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu, alongside the Chairman of the Orile-Agege Sports Committee, Mr. Dipo Liadi, featured live on the prestigious Lagos State Television (LTV) in an exclusive interview discussing preparations for the highly anticipated “Fight for Asiwaju 2027” boxing competition.
Speaking during the interview, Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu emphasized that his administration is introducing a new dimension of governance by prioritizing sports development, particularly at the grassroots level. According to him, sports remain a powerful tool for youth engagement, talent discovery, and community development.
In pursuit of this vision, the Chairman established a Sports Committee made up of experienced sports professionals and practitioners capable of generating innovative ideas and driving sustainable sports development within Orile-Agege LCDA. The committee is chaired by seasoned sports specialist, Mr. Dipo Liadi.
The Chairman disclosed that “Fight for Asiwaju 2027” represents the second edition of the administration’s sports initiative, following the successful “Run for Asiwaju” held earlier in January 2026. Demonstrating practical commitment to sports advancement, the administration has also procured a standard boxing ring, described as the first of its kind owned by any local government administration.
Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu, himself a professional boxer, highlighted the importance of structured sports engagement, noting the clear difference between street fighting and professional boxing conducted within a regulated ring. He reaffirmed his administration’s determination to promote diverse sporting activities and announced plans to construct modern boxing gyms and multi-purpose sports hubs, both indoor and outdoor, across the LCDA.
Providing further details, Mr. Dipo Liadi revealed that the long-awaited competition will commence from April 31 to April 3, 2026, starting 4:00 PM daily. He stated that over 90 percent of participants are local boxers from different weight categories within Orile-Agege, underscoring the administration’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talents.
A total prize fund of ₦2 million has been earmarked for winners, reinforcing the council’s passion for developing indigenous sports talents. The event is projected to become the biggest local boxing competition ever held in Orile-Agege, attracting high-profile dignitaries including former boxing champions, veteran sportsmen and women, sports stakeholders, and community leaders.
Organizers assured residents that adequate planning, safety measures, and security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a successful, entertaining, and well-coordinated sporting spectacle.
