The Kwankwasiyya Movement has cautioned members of the Kano State House of Assembly against turning the impeachment process into a political weapon, warning that such a move could deepen political divisions in the state.
The group issued the warning amid reports of a possible impeachment move against the Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
In a statement released on Friday, the spokesperson of the movement, Dr. Habibu Saleh, described the development as troubling and urged political actors in the state to avoid actions that may appear politically motivated.
According to Saleh, residents of Kano are closely monitoring the unfolding situation, and many are worried that the proposed impeachment may be influenced more by political interests than constitutional necessity.
He noted that while the Nigerian Constitution empowers lawmakers to hold public officials accountable, impeachment remains one of the most serious powers available to any legislative body and should not be used recklessly.
“Impeachment must never be reduced to a tool for settling political disagreements or rearranging political alliances. It should be guided strictly by justice, fairness, and the overall interest of the people,” he said.
Saleh also reminded the current leadership in the state that the administration’s victory was the result of the collective sacrifices of thousands of Kwankwasiyya supporters across Kano State.
“The victory that produced this government was not the effort of any single individual. It was achieved through the loyalty, sacrifices, and unity of Kwankwasiyya supporters across the 44 local government areas of Kano State,” he stated.
He warned that any action perceived as targeting important figures within the administration could send the wrong signal to party loyalists and supporters who worked tirelessly during the election.
“Those in authority must always remember the collective struggle that made their success possible. Political power should not be used in ways that create the impression of abandoning the alliances and loyalties that built the movement,” Saleh added.
The movement further called on members of the Kano State House of Assembly to perform their constitutional responsibilities with fairness, independence, and a strong sense of duty to the people.
“The authority of the Assembly comes directly from the people, and it must be exercised with wisdom, fairness, and a clear commitment to the electorate,” he said.
Saleh also warned that actions perceived as political persecution could create unnecessary tension within the state’s political landscape.
“History has shown that when political power is used in ways that appear unjust or vindictive, the people eventually respond through democratic processes,” he noted.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement reaffirmed its commitment to peace, democratic stability, and the protection of the political mandate given to the current administration by the people of Kano State.
“At this critical moment, all political actors must act with restraint and wisdom while remembering the sacrifices of the millions of supporters whose efforts brought this government into power,” the statement concluded.
