ABAKALIKI — Tragedy struck the Ebonyi State Police Command on Tuesday following the sudden death of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, who reportedly slumped during a management meeting at the command headquarters in Abakaliki.
Sources disclosed that the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. while a senior officers’ management meeting was ongoing in the office of the Commissioner of Police. The senior officer was said to have suddenly developed health complications and collapsed in the course of the meeting.
He was immediately rushed to the Police Clinic at the command headquarters, where medical personnel made frantic efforts to resuscitate him. However, all attempts proved unsuccessful, and he was later confirmed dead by doctors.
Following his death, the remains of the late officer were transferred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA I) mortuary in Abakaliki.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, described the death as a devastating loss to the command.
According to him, ACP Popoola, who was the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Intelligence Department (SID), suddenly developed breathing difficulties and began gasping for air during the meeting.
“He was promptly rushed to the Police Clinic at the Police Headquarters, Abakaliki, where he was attended to by the command’s medical team. Despite all efforts to revive him, he was confirmed dead by medical doctors,” Ukandu stated.
The police spokesperson further described the late officer as a dedicated, committed and professional police officer whose service to the Nigeria Police Force would be deeply missed.
